Vowel Perception in Normal and Hearing Impaired Listeners
نویسنده
چکیده
This studied examined vowel perception in young adults of normal hearing and hearing impaired with a mild to severe sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) listeners. Stimuli were presented at conversational level and were recorded, digitized, and edited syllables. The stimuli were broken down into varying transitions. Listeners discriminated the audio presented selected corresponding stimuli option based on his or her perception. Results showed that normal hearing listeners performed significantly better than the hearing impaired across three Transitions. Listeners with hearing loss were consistently worse, suggesting a poorer representation of the vowel transition (or the vowel) to begin with rather than poorer temporal processing. Regardless of representation, the findings supported that hearing impaired listeners have more difficulties with vowel perception than normal listeners.

Effect of Vowel Auditory Training on the Speech-In-Noise Perception among Older Adults with Normal Hearing
Introduction: Aging reduces the ability to understand speech in noise. Hearing rehabilitation is one of the ways to help older people communicate effectively. This study aimed to investigate the effect of vowel auditory training on the improvement of speech-in-noise (SIN) perception among elderly listeners. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted on 36 elderly ...
متن کاملTemporal and spectral cue use for initial plosive voicing perception by hearing-impaired children and normal-hearing children and adults.
The influence of voice-onset time (VOT) and vowel-onset characteristics on the perception of the voicing contrast for initial plosive consonants was examined for hearing-impaired children, and normal-hearing children and adults. Listeners identified spoken 'DAD'--'TAD' stimuli controlled for VOT and vowel onset characteristics. Only six of 16 hearing-impaired children appropriately identified t...

Objective: This study was a basic investigation of the ability of concurrent speech segregation in hearing impaired children. Concurrent segregation is one of the fundamental components of auditory scene analysis and plays an important role in speech perception. In the present study, we compared auditory late responses or ALRs between hearing impaired and normal children. Materials & Methods...
متن کاملSystematic Groupings in Hearing Impaired Consonant Perception
Auditory training programs are currently being explored as a method of improving hearing impaired (HI) speech perception; precise knowledge of a patient’s individual differences in speech perception allows one to more accurately diagnose how a training program should be implemented. Remapping or variations in the weighting of acoustic cues, due to auditory plasticity, can be examined with the d...
متن کاملContribution of consonant versus vowel information to sentence intelligibility for young normal-hearing and elderly hearing-impaired listeners.
The purpose of this study was to examine the contribution of information provided by vowels versus consonants to sentence intelligibility in young normal-hearing (YNH) and typical elderly hearing-impaired (EHI) listeners. Sentences were presented in three conditions, unaltered or with either the vowels or the consonants replaced with speech shaped noise. Sentences from male and female talkers i...
